How to test for a UTI?

Find the right test for you.

UTI Testing

Feeling the discomfort of UTI symptoms and not sure what to do? We've all been there. Testing for a UTI is the first crucial step in confirming whether those symptoms are indeed a urinary tract infection and, importantly, guiding you towards the right testing for you.

How UTI Tests Compare

We break down the testing options available, making it easier for you to understand and choose the test that best suits your needs and helping you make informed decisions about your health.

PCR Testing: Advanced & Accurate

The MyUTI Test uses PCR technology.

UTI PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) tests are cutting-edge and can detect even small amounts of bacteria or fungi. They're highly accurate, fast and provide detailed information about the pathogens causing your UTI in addition to the antibiotics which may not work for your infection. With MyUTI, you can get a clearer picture from the comfort of home, leading to more targeted treatment and fast relief.

UTI Test Strips: A urinalysis or urine dipstick testing

UTI test strips are often the first test used to check for signs of a UTI. It’s quick and simple, involving a urine sample that's tested for the presence of inflammation including substances like nitrites, leukocytes and blood.

Unfortunately, these tests are not reliable. In fact, data shows they are inaccurate up to 70% and typically require additional testing to confirm you have a urinary tract infection.

Urine Culture: Performed in a lab

A urine culture test is the most common method for testing and diagnosing UTIs. It involves growing bacteria in the lab from your urine to identify the specific type causing the infection, which can take up to 5 days.

The standard urine culture is looking for the growth of 1-2 bacteria, typically e.coli. If a bacteria is detected, then an antibiotic sensitivity test is performed to help in selecting the drug for treatment.

Urine culture testing does have its limitations beyond timing, data has shown that in 30% of infections where a biofilm or multiple bacteria are present the accuracy of results are negatively impacted.

NGS: Next Generation Sequencing

Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) takes advanced testing a step further. This testing begins with PCR analysis, from there, DNA sequencing is performed to identify the good and bad organisms in your urinary tract.

While NGS can provide a comprehensive review of the good and bad bacteria in the urinary tract, the complex results can make it difficult to determine what to treat. Leaving some physicians confused on the appropriate antibiotics versus other options to balance the good organisms that live in the urinary microbiome.
