Why Men May Experience UTI Symptoms: Causes and Treatment

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are commonly associated with women, but men can also experience UTI symptoms. While UTIs in men are less common than in women, the rate of incidence does increase with age.

What are the causes of UTIs in men?

The most common cause of UTIs in individuals with penises is an enlarged prostate gland. As the prostate gland grows larger, it can put pressure on the urethra, which can cause urine to back up into the bladder and increase the risk of infection. This is due to the fact that the bacteria which would normally flow freely out with the urine will sit in the bladder. Those who have a history of prostate problems, such as prostatitis or prostate cancer, are also at an increased risk of developing UTIs.

Other factors that can contribute to UTIs in men include a blockage in the urinary tract, such as a kidney stone, an abnormality in the urinary tract, or a weakened immune system. In some cases, individuals with penises who engage in anal sex may also be at an increased risk of developing UTIs.

What are the common UTI symptoms in men?

Symptoms of UTIs in men can include a strong urge to urinate, frequent urination, pain or burning during urination, cloudy or bloody urine, and pain in the lower abdomen or back. If left untreated, UTIs can lead to more serious health problems, such as kidney damage or sepsis.

Is there a specific UTI cure for men?

If you are experiencing UTI symptoms, it's important to seek medical attention. Your doctor may perform a physical exam to determine what might be causing the symptoms.  The only way to get rid of a confirmed urinary tract infection is with antibiotics.

Testing for a UTI in men?

To confirm an infection and ensure the proper medication this requires ordering diagnostic tests, such as a urine culture or imaging tests, to determine the cause of your symptoms and develop an appropriate treatment plan. Advanced testing that can identify a larger number of bacteria that might be causing the symptoms, like the MyUTI test can also be used to determine if UTI-like symptoms are in fact an infection, or if the symptoms may be due to some other condition.

Is there a UTI home remedy for men to follow?

Unfortunately, there is not a lot that can be done when it comes to the aging process and how the body changes.  However, there are a few recommendations that may  help prevent UTIs in men:

  • Practice good hygiene (including cleaning the foreskin)

  • Drink plenty of water to flush out the bladder

  • Urinate frequently

What type of doctor should a man see for repeat UTI symptoms?

Seek out a specialist if you experience continued UTI-like symptoms.  A urologist can help you evaluate the anatomical or pathological issues within the urinary tract if an infection is not the reason for symptoms. Check out our physician locator for options in your area.
